Subterra Penitus Farming is a first-of-its-kind underground aquaponics facility in Penrose, Colorado. Built into the earth itself, the facility uses natural geothermal stability to maintain ideal growing conditions — without the massive energy bills of traditional greenhouses.

Fish and plants grow together in a closed-loop ecosystem. Fish produce nutrients. Plants clean the water. The cycle repeats — The current modeled design target is 99.7% water recirculation; actual performance requires witnessed commissioning and a 30-day ledger. Nothing is wasted.

Fish Cultivation

Tilapia are raised in temperature-controlled tanks on the lowest level. Their waste produces natural nutrients — ammonia that feeds the biological cycle.

Biofiltration

Beneficial bacteria convert ammonia into nitrates. Moving bed bioreactors and trickling filters maintain perfect water quality — continuously monitored.

Plant Production

Nutrient-rich water flows to the grow beds above. Leafy greens and herbs absorb the nutrients, naturally filtering the water before it returns to the fish.

Water Recirculation

The current modeled design target is 99.7% water recirculation; actual performance requires witnessed commissioning and a 30-day ledger. The closed loop means minimal makeup water, zero discharge, and zero waste — a truly sustainable system.
